How to Create a Pairs Account in Japan (2026 Guide)

A Pairs code works only for a single man aged 18 or over who is physically in Japan and holds Japanese-issued photo ID. Pairs blocks access from everywhere except Japan, Korea and Taiwan, and its help pages list ID issued outside Japan as not usable. If that is not you, do not buy this code for yourself. This guide is based on Pairs’ own help pages and terms, and on customer reports where we say so, as of October 2026.

What you need

  • To be in Japan. Pairs’ terms limit the service to residents of Japan, Korea and Taiwan, and the code itself is usable only in Japan.
  • To be eligible. 18 or older, not a high-school student, single and without a partner.
  • A male account. Only male members can use the code.
  • Japanese photo ID. Pairs accepts a driver’s license, a My Number card, a residence card (在留カード) or a passport. Its help pages list documents issued outside Japan as not usable. They add that exceptions exist, but do not say which. One help article specifies Japanese passports and says passports issued from February 2020 cannot be used.
  • A way to sign in. A LINE account, an Apple ID, a Google account, or a phone number (SMS) plus an e-mail address. Pairs’ help does not say if phone numbers from outside Japan work.
  • The Pairs app for identity verification. Pairs supports iPhone with iOS 17.0 or later, and Android 9.0 or later on handsets sold as Japan-domestic models. Tablets are not supported. On iPhone the app is listed in the Japan App Store and was not found in the US or UK stores, so you would need a Japan-region Apple Account to install it.
  • A web browser on your phone for the code. The code cannot be entered in the app. Pairs’ supported-device list applies the same Android condition to the browser version.
  • No running paid membership. Pairs refuses the code while a paid period is active.

You do not need a payment card or a postal address. The profile asks only for your area of residence.

The Pairs help center exists in Japanese, Korean and Traditional Chinese. There is no English help, so the labels below are given in Japanese with their meaning.

New account or existing one

If you already have a Pairs account, use it. The app and the browser version share one account, and Pairs’ terms prohibit creating more than one. If your identity is already verified, skip to “Redeeming the code”.

Creating the account

Sign up (app or browser)

Enter your real gender, date of birth and residence. Pairs rejects ID when the gender or age does not match what you registered.

  1. Install the Pairs app, or open pairs.lv in your phone’s browser.
  2. Choose a sign-up method: LINE, Apple, Google, or phone number (SMS) plus e-mail. The buttons read 〇〇ではじめる (Start with …). On a device that has used Pairs before, they may read 〇〇で続ける (Continue with …) or その他のログイン方法 (Other login methods). E-mail-only sign-up ended in July 2026.
  3. If you sign up by phone number, Pairs sends a code by SMS (確認コード). The code it sends by e-mail is called 認証コード. Allow mail from @pairs.lv.
  4. Enter your 性別 (gender). It must be male to use this code.
  5. Enter your 生年月日 (date of birth).
  6. Enter your 居住地 (residence).
  7. Follow the remaining screens to set up your profile.

Pairs’ own sign-up instructions are in its help article on registration (Japanese).

Verify your identity (app only)

You cannot redeem the code or send messages until this is done. The labels in your app may differ from the ones below. If they do, look for 本人確認 (identity verification) on My Page.

  1. Open the Pairs app and log in.
  2. Tap マイページ (My Page) at the bottom right.
  3. Tap 会員ステータス (Member Status).
  4. Under 本人確認 (identity verification), tap ステップ1を完了させる (Complete Step 1).
  5. Choose マイナンバーカードスキャン認証 (My Number card chip scan) or あんしん5秒審査 (photo of your ID plus a selfie).
  6. Tap 本人確認へ進む (Proceed to identity verification) and follow the screens.
  7. Wait for the result. Pairs tells you in the app and by e-mail. Its help articles give different review times for the photo method, from a few minutes to 24 hours.

Details are in Pairs’ help article on identity verification (Japanese).

Redeeming the code

Pairs states that the code is valid for 180 days from purchase and cannot be used after that. Redeem it soon after delivery.

Pairs accepts the code only when no paid period is running. If you are a paid member now, see “Problems and fixes” first.

  1. On your smartphone, open pairs.lv in the browser and log in with the same login method you use in the app.
  2. Tap マイページ (My Page).
  3. Tap 会員ステータス (Member Status).
  4. Under 有料会員 (paid membership), tap プラン内容を確認 (Review the plan details).
  5. Tap Pairsプリペイドカードまたはギフトカードからコードを登録 (Register a code from a Pairs prepaid card or gift card).
  6. Enter the code from our e-mail. Pairs calls it PINコード or デジタルコード.
  7. Tap 登録する (Register).

After that you can use the app as a paid member. Pairs’ own instructions are in its help article on prepaid cards and digital codes (Japanese).

Problems and fixes

  • お客様の環境ではPairsをご利用いただくことができません (Pairs cannot be used in your environment) or 日本国外からのご利用を制限しております (use from outside Japan is restricted): Pairs judges that you are connecting from outside Japan. If you are in Japan, Pairs suggests changing network, for example from Wi-Fi to mobile data. If you are outside Japan, Korea or Taiwan, Pairs offers no fix. See its help article on use from overseas (Japanese).
  • There is no field for the code: you are in the app. Log in through the browser.
  • The code is refused while you are subscribed: Pairs accepts the code only after the account is back to free status. If you pay by credit card or an earlier code, log in and go to マイページ (My Page), then 会員ステータス (Member Status), then 有料会員の解約 (Cancel paid membership), then 有料会員を解約する (Cancel the paid membership). Pairs says these accounts move to free status right away. If you pay another way, the steps and the timing may differ, so check Pairs’ help. Keep the 180-day limit in mind.
  • The code was entered but nothing changed: check each character. If it is correct, Pairs asks you to contact its support with the code.
  • 使用できない書類です (this document cannot be used): the ID is not on the accepted list, or was issued outside Japan.
  • The ID is rejected for another reason: the gender or age on the ID may not match what you registered.
  • この番号は何度も使用されています (this number has been used many times) or 現在利用できないメールアドレスです (this e-mail address cannot be used now): too many login attempts. Wait and try again.
  • The SMS or e-mail code does not arrive: check the number, your SMS filter, and that mail from @pairs.lv is allowed.
  • これより先の利用には本人確認が必要です (identity verification is needed to continue): Pairs wants you to verify your identity again. A login from an unusual environment can trigger this.
  • 利用規約によりご利用できません (cannot be used under the terms of service): Pairs says this follows a past terms violation and that further use is not possible. If you know of no violation, use Pairs’ contact form with the category アカウント停止について (about account suspension).

Rules and limits worth knowing

  • Pairs’ terms of service allow only residents of Japan, Korea and Taiwan to use the service. They forbid use from an IP address outside those three places, and any use that Pairs judges to come from elsewhere. Pairs also restricts networks it judges to be improper. Pairs says it has no current plan to lift this, although it is preparing for use in other countries.
  • Pairs is offered in Korea and Taiwan, but the code is usable only in Japan.
  • A connection through Japan (a VPN) does not replace the ID requirement, and Pairs’ terms and help pages do not mention VPNs by name. The rule above on use from outside Japan, Korea and Taiwan still applies. We cannot help you find a VPN.
  • The terms prohibit false profile information, more than one account per person, and handing your account to someone else. Face data from verification is compared with other accounts.
  • Pairs may ask for verification again, when it doubts eligibility or at random. If it finds a violation later, it can void the membership.
  • The code pays for the male paid membership only. It does not pay for Premium Option, Private Mode, other add-ons or points.
  • Once a code has been used, the payment cannot be canceled or changed. Pairs does not cash out, refund, take back or reissue a code, and a code is for one user.
  • Plan promotions do not apply to code redemptions.

FAQ

I live outside Japan. Can I use this code?

Not by any route Pairs supports. Access is blocked from outside Japan, Korea and Taiwan, the code is for use in Japan only, and identity verification needs Japanese-issued ID.

I am a foreign resident of Japan. Can I use it?

Pairs lists the residence card (在留カード) as accepted ID. If you live in Japan, are a single man aged 18 or over and hold one, the steps above apply to you.

Can I buy the code for someone else?

The terms shown with the code at its official retail listing in Japan say it is for personal use, that resale is refused, and that it may be given as a gift to a male friend. He must meet every requirement above and redeem it on his own account in Japan.

Will the membership renew when the code period ends?

This is not clear. Pairs’ help shows a next renewal date (次回更新日) for code memberships but does not say what happens on that date. Check 会員ステータス (Member Status) before the period ends.

Can I pay with my own card instead?

Pairs states that credit cards issued outside Japan are not accepted. A code does not need a card.

What if I cannot redeem the code I bought?

If the code itself is rejected, write to support@japan-codes.com with a screenshot of the error. Our FAQ explains how we handle code problems. A different code will not help if Pairs blocks your connection or your ID. Pairs itself does not refund or reissue codes.

If you meet the requirements, you can find the 1, 6 and 12 month codes on our Pairs digital codes page. For questions before or after you buy, write to support@japan-codes.com.
