A PlayStation Store Gift Card (Japan) works only on an account with country/region Japan. An existing account’s region can never be changed, so most customers need a new, second account. Sign-up requires a Japanese postal code, and Sony’s terms require your real country of residence and say Sony cannot support the account when it differs. The balance cannot buy CERO Z (18+) games. This guide is based on Sony’s own help pages and terms, and on customer reports where we say so, as of October 2026.
What you need
- An e-mail address never used with Sony or PlayStation. Sony says disposable addresses may not be supported.
- A Japanese postal code, prefecture and city. The form requires them. Read the note above the sign-up steps first.
- To be 18 or older. Only adults can create an account alone, and wallet codes cannot be redeemed on child accounts.
- A name in Latin letters, an Online ID and a password or passkey.
- No phone number, payment method or ID. Sony’s form does not ask for them. Sony may ask for ID documents if it suspects fraud.
- A VPN is reportedly not needed. Customers report creating the account and redeeming codes from outside Japan on a normal connection, most recently in January 2026. A few unconfirmed reports link a VPN to sign-up errors. Sony’s terms and help pages do not mention VPNs.
- A way to read Japanese. The store and Sony’s e-mails for a Japan account are in Japanese only, and Sony Japan’s help pages offer only Japanese support. Browser translation helps. Console menus follow your console’s own language.
New account or existing one
You need a new account. Sony states that an account’s country or region cannot be changed after creation, and that accounts cannot be merged. Sony does not prohibit holding more than one account, but each one needs a different e-mail address.
Creating the account
In a web browser (recommended)
Before you start. The country/region and the date of birth cannot be changed later. The form asks for a home location in Japan, and Sony’s terms require accurate details and your real country of residence. Customers outside Japan report entering a Japanese location they do not live at; “Rules and limits” below covers the terms and what customers report. We cannot supply an address.
The form is reported to follow your browser’s language, and which version you get can differ, so labels are given in English and Japanese. Where only the Japanese label is known, it comes first and the English in brackets is a translation. The screens after the first one are described from the text of Sony’s form; their order may differ. A puzzle (bot check) may appear at some point. Complete it; if it repeats, try again later.
- Open Sony’s create-account help page on a computer or phone.
- Select the link Account Management (アカウント管理).
- Select Create New Account (新しいアカウントの作成).
- On the page that opens, select the button to create an account. In early October 2026 it was labelled Create (作成).
- Set Country/Region (国/地域) to Japan (日本). You may first get a short screen with only Country/Region, Language (言語) and Next (次へ). After you choose Japan you may be moved to another form where the country resets; select Japan again.
- On Your Information (あなたの情報), enter the Postal code (郵便番号): 7 digits, no hyphen. It must be a code that exists.
- Choose the State or province (都道府県) from the list. It must be the prefecture that the postal code belongs to.
- Enter the City (市町村). It is not known whether this box accepts Latin letters. Sony’s own postal-code data gives city names in Japanese only, so the name in Japanese characters may be needed.
- Enter your Date of birth (生年月日). The Japanese form asks for year, month, day. A date under 18 creates a child account, which cannot redeem the code.
- Write down the postal code, prefecture, city and date of birth. Sony says the home location is used to verify your identity when you contact it.
- Select Next (次へ).
- On サインインIDおよびオンラインID (sign-in ID and Online ID), enter your e-mail address as サインインID(Eメールアドレス) (sign-in ID, e-mail address).
- Enter an オンラインID (Online ID): at least 3 characters, starting with a letter.
- Enter your name in 名(ローマ字) (given name) and 姓(ローマ字) (family name). Only Latin letters, spaces, dashes and apostrophes are accepted.
- Tick the agreement box. It also confirms that the information you entered is accurate.
- Select Next (次へ).
- On コンテンツをパーソナライズ (personalize content), select Confirm (確定).
- Choose Sign In with Password (パスワードでサインイン). The other option is a passkey, パスキーで簡単かつ安全にサインイン(推奨); these steps continue with the password.
- Set a password: 8 or more characters, with at least two of letters, numbers and symbols. No 3 identical or sequential characters in a row (222, ABC), and not your e-mail or Online ID.
- Select Create an Account (アカウントを作成). On the older form the button is Agree and Create Account (同意してアカウントを作成する).
- Open Sony’s verification e-mail and follow its link. The e-mail is in Japanese. Sony says to search your inbox for “PlayStation 確認”; Sony’s general account help names the button 確認する (Verify). If the e-mail is missing, check the junk folder. If the link has expired, Sony sends a new one; use the newest e-mail. You cannot sign in before this is done.
- If the form is waiting on a screen with Already Verified (確認しました), select it.
- If a 2-step verification screen (2段階認証) appears, select スキップ (skip). It is optional and needs no phone number. If you set it up, use Authenticator App (認証アプリ) and save the backup codes.
- Sign in soon, for example on PlayStation Store, where the web redeem steps below start. Sony’s general account help says an account is closed if no service is started within 2 hours; it is not confirmed that this applies to PlayStation sign-up.
- Check the region. Signed in on the web, go to Account Management (アカウント管理) > Your Information (あなたの情報) > Edit your Residential Address (住所 > 編集). The country/region is shown at the bottom and must be Japan. Sony’s country/region page shows this route.
Add the account to your console
Skip this if you will redeem on the web now; you can add the account later. Console menus are in your console’s language; the Japanese labels below apply only to a console set to Japanese. Sony may e-mail a one-time code when the account signs in on a new console, app or browser. That e-mail is in Japanese; type the code shown in it.
- PS5: from the home screen select your profile picture, then Switch User > Add User > Get Started. Sign in with the Japan account.
(ユーザーを切り替える > ユーザーを追加する > 使用を始める) - PS4: hold the PS button, then Power > Switch User > New User > Create a User. Sign in with the Japan account.
(電源 > ユーザーを切り替える > 新しいユーザー > ユーザーを作成する)
On the console instead
You can also create the account on the console. Follow the PS5 or PS4 path above. Then on PS5 choose Create an Account (アカウントを作成する); on PS4 choose New to PlayStation Network? Create an Account (PlayStation™Networkは初めてですか?アカウントを作成してください). Sony’s PS4 guide says the console form asks for your address; the exact fields are not confirmed. Accounts cannot be created on PS3 or PS Vita.
Redeeming the code
Check first that you are signed in to the Japan account. Once added, funds cannot be refunded or moved to another account. The code has 12 digits and can be used once. Enter it once and then check the balance: Sony blocks further tries for one hour after too many attempts.
If you created the account in a browser, you can continue there with the web route. Do not enter the code at checkout: Sony’s Japanese help page labels that field as a discount coupon. Sony’s redeem help page shows the routes below.
Web
- Open
store.playstation.comin a browser and sign in with the Japan account. The store text is then in Japanese. - Select your profile at the top of the page.
- Select コードを引き換え (Redeem Code). Another Sony page calls this item コードの使用, so the label may differ.
- Enter the 12 digits.
- Select 続ける (Continue).
PS5
- Switch to the Japan user.
- Open PlayStation Store.
- Press the triangle button.
- Select … (More) > Redeem Code (コード番号の入力).
- Enter the code.
- Select Redeem (引き換え).
PS4
- Switch to the Japan user.
- Open PlayStation Store.
- Scroll to the bottom of the sidebar.
- Select Redeem Codes (コード番号を入力する).
- Enter the code.
- Select Continue (続ける).
- Select Confirm (確定) or Yes (はい).
PlayStation App
- Make sure the app is signed in to the Japan account, not your main one.
- Select the Store icon.
- Select the menu icon on the right.
- Select Redeem Code (コード番号の入力).
- Enter the code.
- Select Continue (続ける).
Check the balance
On the web store, select your profile, then 支払い管理 (Payment Management). The wallet balance is at the top.
Playing purchases from your usual user
Console sharing lets other users of the same console play the Japan account’s games. On PS5 it can be on for one console at a time. Sony says it is switched on automatically on the first PS5 or PS4 the account signs in to, so this is usually only a check. Do it while switched to the Japan user. Customers report that games bought on a Japan account then play under a user of another region on the same console.
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play > Enable.
(設定 > ユーザーとアカウント > その他 > コンテンツ共有とオフラインプレイ > 有効にする) - PS4: Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4 > Activate.
(設定 > アカウント管理 > いつも使うPS 4として登録する > 登録する)
Problems and fixes
- Code refused because of region (WS-45480-1, E-82000134). You are signed in to an account that is not Japan-region. Sign in with the Japan account. To check an account’s region, use the last sign-up step above.
- Wallet limit exceeded (E-82000138, WC-40377-1). The wallet limit is 60,000 JPY. Spend some balance, then redeem again.
- Code already redeemed (WS-45479-9). Check the transaction history (利用履歴) of every account on the console. On a PS4 set to Japanese: 設定 > アカウント管理 > アカウント情報 > ウォレット > 利用履歴.
- “Try again later” (WC-40378-2). Too many attempts. Sony says to wait one hour.
- Checkout asks for a credit card, or the wallet cannot be used. The title is CERO Z or a pre-order not yet rated. There is no fix with gift card balance.
- A PlayStation Plus game asks you to verify your age with a credit card. The game is CERO Z. It needs a Japan-issued card on the account; there is no fix with gift card balance.
- Payment method required (WC-41705-7). Sony says some purchases and offers are available only with a payment method saved on the account.
- Your own card is refused. See the FAQ. Do not keep retrying: failed attempts block payment changes for 24 hours.
- Postal code rejected, or the message 入力した都道府県と郵便番号が一致しません。 (prefecture and postal code do not match). Use 7 digits without a hyphen and choose the prefecture that the code belongs to.
- E-mail already registered. Use another address.
- Sign-up fails at the end. If a VPN is on, try turning it off; a few unconfirmed customer reports link a VPN to sign-up errors. For console error WS-119699-5, Sony says to retry or use another e-mail address.
- You are asked for a code sent by e-mail when signing in. Open the newest Sony e-mail and type the code shown in it.
- The store asks for a family manager. The birth date entered was under 18, which creates a child account. Start again with a new e-mail address.
- Padlock on a game for your usual user. Turn on console sharing for the Japan account as shown above. If the padlock stays, restore licences on the console; the menu path for that is not covered here.
- Something else. See Sony’s code problems page. Sony Japan’s help pages send unresolved code problems to its Japanese-language support; see “Rules and limits” on when Sony refuses support.
Rules and limits
- Residence. Sony’s Japanese terms tell residents of Japan to select Japan, and say Sony cannot support an account whose registered country differs from where the holder really lives. The English terms say: “During Account creation you must select the country or region of your residence”. The Japanese terms say customers may buy only from the Sony company responsible for their country of residence.
- Accuracy. The terms require accurate and complete information, and say accounts made with false information may be suspended or restricted. Many long-time holders outside Japan report no action. Isolated ban reports exist, and some customers report support being refused because of the region mismatch.
- CERO Z. Wallet funds cannot buy CERO Z games, their demos, or pre-orders awaiting a CERO rating. For CERO Z games and demos Sony charges a credit card in full, whatever the balance, and the card must be issued in Japan. CERO Z games inside a Japanese PlayStation Plus subscription also need a card on the account.
- What the balance buys. Digital goods only: games, add-ons, in-game currency and pre-orders. Prices are in yen. Movies and TV are no longer sold.
- Add-ons for disc games. Sony states that an add-on does not work with a disc game from a different region.
- No refunds or transfers. Funds in the wallet cannot be refunded or moved to another account.
- No expiry. Store cards and wallet balance do not expire. Sony may delete an account that is unused for a period it does not state, and the balance is lost with it.
FAQ
Can I pay with my own card or PayPal instead?
Sony accepts Japan-issued cards only and refuses top-ups when the payment method’s region differs from the account’s. Customers report foreign cards being refused. Reports on foreign PayPal differ: most say refused, one from 2026 says it worked.
Can I buy PlayStation Plus with the balance?
This is uncertain. One Sony page says the balance can pay for PlayStation Plus, another says a subscription needs a payment method on the account. Some customers report buying it without a card. Japan’s PlayStation Plus terms are worded for residents of Japan.
Will the games be in English?
Not always. Customers report that some Japan-store versions have Japanese text and audio only, and that the store page shows the languages. Check before you buy.
Can I use the card on PS3 or PS Vita?
Until July 2027, when Sony closes PlayStation Store on both. The account itself must be created in a browser or on a PS5 or PS4.
The cards are in our PlayStation Store Gift Card (Japan) category. If a code we sent is refused on a Japan-region account, e-mail a screenshot of the error to support@japan-codes.com. Our FAQ covers delivery and refunds.
