How to Set Up a Japan Google Play Account in Japan (2026 Guide)

A Japan Google Play gift code is for people in Japan: Google’s terms limit it to residents aged 13 or over. You must be in Japan to set the Play country, redeem and spend, with a payment method from Japan. Even there, Google may ask for more information and documents, and buyers of reseller codes report being refused. This guide is based on Google’s own help pages and terms, and on customer reports where we say so, as of October 2026.

What you need

If you are outside Japan: we found no recent user report of a Japan code being both redeemed and spent from abroad. The reports we found are failures. If you do not plan to be in Japan, this product is not for you. Google gives no refunds.

If you already hold a code, do not try it from outside Japan or through a VPN. One user comment says a code first tried from abroad then kept triggering Google’s request for documents. Gift codes do not expire, so the code can wait until you are in Japan.

  • To be in Japan when you set the country, when you redeem and when you spend. Google does not say how it checks your location.
  • A personal Google Account that is not in a Google Family group. Google says some features might not work on work or school accounts.
  • An e-mail address and a date of birth showing you are 13 or older.
  • A Google payments profile for Japan. This is the billing record in your Google Account: name, address and country. Its country is your Play country.
  • A payment method from Japan. Google asks for one when you set Japan as your Play country.
  • An Android device, if you want to pay inside apps and games.

New account or existing one

Use a separate Google Account for Japan. Google’s terms allow for people having more than one account. If you switch your main account to Japan instead:

  • Your old balance stays tied to the old country until you switch back.
  • You lose all Play Points and your level.
  • Subscriptions stay on the old payments profile, and you may lose access to some content.

Creating the account

Google’s help page on creating an account describes the form. The order of the fields can differ. In all steps below, the Japanese label is given in brackets in case your screen is in Japanese.

  1. Open the Google Account sign-in page.
  2. Select Create account (アカウントを作成).
  3. Choose Personal use (個人で使用).
  4. Enter your basic information, date of birth and gender.
  5. Choose a new Gmail address, or select Use your existing email address (既存のメールアドレスを使用する).
  6. If you used an existing address, enter the code Google e-mails to it.
  7. Set a password and select Next (次へ).
  8. Add a phone number if Google asks for one. The help page marks it as Optional (省略可), but another Google help page says phone verification is sometimes required. No Google page says the number must be Japanese. Reports differ: some users were asked for a Japanese number, while older reports from 2022 say a foreign number was accepted.

Do not add this account to a Google Family group. Members of a Family group cannot change their Play country.

Setting Japan as the Play country

Read this before you start:

  • Google’s rule: to set a country “you must be in that location and have a payment method from the new country or region.”
  • Once the country is set, you cannot change it for at least 90 days.
  • Payment methods Google lists for Japan: American Express, Mastercard, Visa, JCB, PayPal, PayPay, Edy, Merpay, carrier billing, cash at convenience stores, and Play balance or gift cards. Virtual credit cards are not supported.
  • No Google page says whether a gift code alone is enough for this step. One community reply warns that a card billed abroad on a Japan profile has caused trouble at later identity checks. We could not confirm either point. If you have none of these payment methods, this guide has no way past this step.
  • Google asks for a name and an address when a payments profile is created. One community reply says a Japan profile asks for a Japanese address. The exact fields are not documented.

On the web

  1. Go to play.google.com and sign in.
  2. Select your profile icon.
  3. Select Settings (設定).
  4. Select Country and profiles (国とプロフィール).
  5. Select Japan.
  6. Follow the prompts to add a payment method for Japan.

In the Play Store app on Android

  1. Open the Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon.
  3. Tap Settings (設定).
  4. Tap About, then Update Play Store. These steps need a current version of the app.
  5. Back in Settings, tap General (全般; Google’s help page also prints 一般).
  6. Tap Account and device preferences (アカウントとデバイスの設定).
  7. Tap Country and profiles (国とプロファイル).
  8. Select Japan.
  9. Follow the prompts to add a payment method for Japan.

If Country and profiles or Japan is missing

Google does not see you in Japan, you changed country in the last 90 days, or the account is in a Family group. A new account may also show no choice: Google does not document how a new account gets its first country. Google only says that a payments profile is created the first time you enter payment details. This guide has no documented next step for that case.

Check the result

  1. Go to payments.google.com and sign in.
  2. Open Settings (設定).
  3. Under Payments profile (お支払いプロファイル), find Country/Region (国/地域). This is your Play country.

The change can take up to 48 hours. Details are on Google’s help page on changing your Play country.

Redeeming the code

Wait until you are in Japan. Google requires you to be there when you redeem.

  • Keep our order e-mail and receipt. Users report that these are what Google asks for if it requests proof of purchase.
  • One user in Japan advises redeeming soon after buying. One community reply advises turning off any VPN and any foreign SIM or eSIM first.
  • Enter the code without spaces or hyphens. Codes usually have 16 letters and digits, but e-mailed codes can differ in length.
  • On an iPhone or iPad, use the web. On Android, use the web or the app.

On the web

  1. Go to play.google.com/redeem. The link opens a Play store page and needs sign-in.
  2. Sign in to your Japan account. The profile menu also has the entry Redeem code (コードを利用).
  3. Enter the code.
  4. Select Redeem. The Japanese label is uncertain: Google’s pages print both コードを利用 and 特典を利用.
  5. Check that the account shown is your Japan account.
  6. Select Confirm (確認).

In the Play Store app on Android

  1. Open the Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions (お支払いと定期購入).
  4. Tap Redeem code (コードを利用).
  5. Enter the code.
  6. Tap Redeem code (コードを利用).
  7. Tap Confirm (確認).

Spending the balance

Google checks your location again when you buy, so a successful redemption does not mean the balance can be spent from another country. The balance buys eligible Google Play and YouTube content priced in JPY. It does not cover devices, some subscriptions, Google Store hardware or other gift cards. Google says gift cards can only be used on Android devices or in the Google Play Store. One user reports redeeming on an iPhone and then finding no way to pay with the balance inside the iPhone app.

Problems and fixes

Google explains these messages on its gift card troubleshooting page. Its forms need sign-in.

  • Couldn’t redeem this code. This code can only be used in [country/region]. (このコードを利用できませんでした。このコードは [国 / 地域] でのみ利用できます。) Google does not see you in Japan, or the code’s currency does not match your payments profile. Redeem when you are in Japan. Google’s appeal form is only for people who are sure they are in the country.
  • Couldn’t complete your transaction. Your Play balance can only be used in [country/region]. (取引を完了できませんでした。Play の残高は [国/地域] でのみご利用いただけます。) The same check, at purchase. Users report that this can last for months, in some cases even while they are in Japan.
  • We need more information to redeem your gift card. (ギフトカードをご利用になるには、詳しい情報をご提供いただく必要があります。)
    • Submit Google’s form once. Do not send duplicates.
    • Users report the form asks for the shop name, the code, the city of purchase, a contact phone number, and images of the delivery e-mail and the order page or receipt. They also advise filling in name, address and phone on your payments profile first.
    • Reports differ. Two buyers at Google’s authorized Japanese online shops report being cleared in 3 to 5 days. Several buyers of reseller codes report being rejected or getting no answer, as did a buyer of convenience-store cards in 2022. One user reports that the account was locked.
    • The code stays unredeemed while the case is open. How Google treats our order e-mail is unknown.
  • We need you to verify your identity before we allow you to add balance. (Google Play アカウントに残高を追加するには、本人確認が必要です。) Sign in at payments.google.com (Google Pay), open the alerts and submit what Google requests. Google says you may lose access to the balance if your identity cannot be confirmed.
  • Can’t redeem your gift card due to an issue with your account. Google says you may need to verify and update the information on your payments profile.
  • You have reached your redemption limit. (ご利用限度に達しました。) The balance limit in Japan is 200,000 JPY. Spend some balance, wait 24 hours and try again.
  • There is a problem with that code. (そのコードには問題があります。別のコードをお試しください。) The same applies if the code is called inactive or did not work. Type it again without spaces or hyphens. If it still fails, write to us at support@japan-codes.com.
  • The code you entered has already been redeemed on a different account. Check which account you were signed in to. Google will not say which account it was. If it was none of yours, write to us at support@japan-codes.com.
  • …so that the selected Play country matches your country of residence. The Play country differs from where Google believes you live.
  • Location error although you are in Japan. Users suggest turning off any VPN and any foreign SIM or eSIM, using a Japanese mobile network, waiting a few days and trying the web instead of the app. One user fixed it by selecting the payments profile again under Settings > General > Account and device preferences in the Play Store app. This does not always help. Google’s appeal form is the remaining step.

The official redeem steps are on Google’s help page on redeeming a code.

Rules and limits worth knowing

  • Residence: Google’s Japan gift card terms say use “is limited to residents of Japan aged 13 or over” (translated).
  • Region: “Play gift cards may only be redeemed and used in the country and currency in which they were purchased.”
  • Source: Google’s help page says gift cards “should be obtained from authorized retail partners for each region.” In practice this matters when Google asks for proof of purchase.
  • Circumvention: Google’s Play terms forbid getting around features that restrict access to Google Play, and say Google “may terminate your access to Google Play, the Content or your Google Account without refund to you.”
  • The balance cannot be moved to another account.

FAQ

Can I redeem from outside Japan with a VPN?

Google’s pages do not mention VPNs, but they require you to be in Japan, and the Play terms quoted above forbid getting around access restrictions. Every user report we found from 2022 to 2026 says a VPN did not get a Japan code redeemed or spent, and some say the account was refused afterwards. We cannot help you find a VPN.

Does the code or the balance expire?

No. Google’s terms say gift cards and gift code balance have no fees and no expiry date. Only promotional balance expires.

Can I change the country back later?

Not for at least 90 days after the country is set, and Google says additional restrictions may apply. An account that has more than one country profile can switch between the existing ones.

If you are or will be in Japan, all amounts from 100 to 50,000 JPY are in our Google Play Gift Code (Japan) category. For questions before you buy, write to support@japan-codes.com or see the store FAQ.
