How to Create a Japanese Xbox (Microsoft) Account (2026 Guide)

A Japanese Xbox Prepaid Card can only be added to a Microsoft account with country/region Japan. Microsoft says purchases need a billing address and payment option that match your locale, which here means Japan, and it is not confirmed that redeeming or spending works from outside Japan. A redeemed balance cannot be moved or refunded. This guide is based on Microsoft’s own help pages and terms, and on customer reports where we say so, as of October 2026.

What you need

Know this before you start:

  • Microsoft’s help pages tell users to keep the account region the same as their physical location. Its terms allow it to suspend an account or its balance for violations. Details are under “Rules and limits worth knowing”.
  • If you have more than one code, redeem one and make a small purchase before you redeem the others.
  • CERO Z (18+) games cannot be bought with the prepaid card.

You need:

  • A Microsoft account with country/region Japan. On any other account the code is refused.
  • An e-mail address you will keep. Any personal address works, or you can create a new Outlook address during sign-up. Work and school addresses are rejected. New Microsoft accounts are passwordless by default, so expect to sign in with codes sent to this address. If you lose access to it, you may lose access to the account.
  • Your real date of birth.
  • A web browser. A console is not required.
  • No VPN. Microsoft has a “VPN detected” error and says repeated transactions with location masking may lead to action against the account.

No Japanese phone number, card or ID is documented as required to sign up. You may also be asked for:

  • A payment option and billing address. Microsoft says this can happen before your first redemption. See step 8 under “Redeeming the code”.
  • A phone number. Microsoft’s sign-up page contains a phone check. See “Problems and fixes”.

New account or existing one

Create a new, separate account. Microsoft’s limits page refers to people who hold several Microsoft accounts, and we found no rule against a second one.

You can switch an existing account to Japan instead, but Microsoft recommends a region change only if you are moving for a long time. It has costs:

  • Your existing balance does not move. Microsoft states: “We can’t transfer money between regions.”
  • You cannot change the region again for three months.
  • You may need to buy again some content from your previous region.
  • The change is blocked if the account is suspended or has a balance due.

Creating the account

In a web browser (recommended)

Microsoft’s pages follow your browser language, so you will normally see them in your own language. Japanese labels are given in parentheses in case you see Japanese. They come from Microsoft’s Japanese pages and may differ on screen.

The screens below are taken from the text of Microsoft’s sign-up page. Their order, and whether each one appears for you, may differ.

  1. Turn off any VPN.
  2. Open account.microsoft.com and select Sign in.
  3. Next to New to Microsoft?, select Create an account (アカウントを作成する).
  4. On Create your Microsoft account (Microsoft アカウントの作成), enter your e-mail address, or select Get a new email address (新しいメール アドレスを取得). Do not select Use a phone number instead (または、電話番号を使う).
  5. Select Next (次へ).
  6. If Create your password (パスワードの作成) appears, set a password and select Next. Expect this screen only with a new Outlook address.
  7. On Verify your email (メールの確認), enter the code sent to your e-mail address. Resend code (コードの再送信) sends a new one.
  8. On Add some details (詳細を追加する) or Finish creating your Microsoft account (Microsoft アカウントの作成を完了します), do three things. This screen decides the region of the account.
    • Set Country/region (国/地域) to Japan (日本). The field is filled in from your network location, so you must change it by hand.
    • Enter your real date of birth (生年月日).
    • Select Next (次へ). Selecting it is your agreement to the Microsoft Services Agreement and Privacy Statement.
  9. If Add your name (名前の追加) appears, enter your first name (名) and last name (姓), then select Next.
  10. Pass the human check. It is either Press and hold the button. (ボタンを長押ししてください。) or a puzzle titled Help us beat the robots (ロボットを倒すことにご協力ください).
  11. When sign-up is finished, open account.microsoft.com and select Your info.
  12. Select Edit profile info. Country or region should show Japan.
  13. If it shows another country, change it to Japan and select Save. It is not known whether the three-month limit on region changes applies to a new account.

You can also start sign-up from the Create free account button on Microsoft’s help page on creating an account. Your Xbox profile is created the first time you sign in to Xbox with the account.

On an Xbox console

Microsoft documents sign-up on a console, but not where the country is chosen in that flow. Use the browser if you can. If you use the console, check the region in a browser (steps 11 to 13 above) before you redeem anything.

  1. Under Who’s playing today?, select Add new.
  2. Enter your e-mail address.
  3. Choose a gamertag.
  4. Select I Accept.

Redeeming the code

The code has 25 characters in five blocks: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.

Redeeming is final. A redeemed code cannot be moved to another Microsoft account. Your browser may already be signed in to your main account, so check the account before you enter the code.

In a web browser

  1. Keep any VPN turned off.
  2. If your browser is signed in to another Microsoft account, sign out of it.
  3. Open Microsoft’s redeem page or redeem.microsoft.com.
  4. Sign in with the Japan account. Enter its e-mail address, then the code Microsoft sends to that address, or your password if you set one.
  5. Check which account is signed in. It must be the Japan account. We cannot tell you where the page shows this.
  6. Enter or paste the 25-character code.
  7. Select Next (次へ).
  8. If you are asked to add a payment option or billing info, read this first. Microsoft says you “might be asked to set up your billing info with a payment option before you can redeem” and that nothing is charged. It is not known whether this screen appears on a new Japan account, whether it can be skipped, or whether a card or address from outside Japan is accepted. Microsoft’s Services Agreement says you must not use false, inaccurate or misleading information when signing up; do not enter details that are not yours.
  9. Open the Payment & billing (支払いと請求) page at account.microsoft.com/billing/payments. Your balance is shown at the top of the page and should now include the card value. Microsoft’s balance help page links to it.

On an Xbox console

  1. Sign in with the Japan account.
  2. Press the Xbox button and open Store.
  3. Press the View button and select Redeem.
  4. Enter the code.
  5. Select Next.
  6. Check the balance under Profile & system > Settings > Account > Payment & billing.

Microsoft’s help article on redeeming codes has the steps for consoles and Windows.

Spending the balance

Make one small purchase before you redeem more cards. Microsoft says a mismatch between account region and physical location may cause a “region block” error or a problem making a purchase.

The console location decides which store you see. Microsoft says that when you switch it, you lose access to a balance in another currency. To set it:

  1. Sign in with the Japan account.
  2. Go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Language & location.
  3. Set Location to Japan.
  4. Select Restart now.

On Microsoft’s web store, choose the Japan market with the World (globe) icon at the bottom of any page.

Problems and fixes

  • “The code you are attempting to redeem is for a currency that does not match your account location” (error XBOS3004): the signed-in account is not a Japan account. Sign in with the Japan account and check its region.
  • “This code is for another region” or “It was purchased in a different region than your account”: Microsoft customers reported these messages in 2026 when the account country did not match the card. Check the account region first. If it shows Japan and the message stays, a location check is a possible cause, but that is not confirmed and Microsoft documents no fix. Write to support@japan-codes.com with a screenshot.
  • “VPN detected”: disconnect the VPN, confirm the account region and try again. Do not keep retrying with a VPN on.
  • Verify your phone (電話の確認) during sign-up: Microsoft’s sign-up page contains an SMS check. What triggers it is not documented. It is not known whether a number from outside Japan is accepted on a Japan account.
  • “Account creation has been blocked” or “We can’t create your account”: Microsoft documents no fix. Its general advice is to try another sign-up method or another device. After many attempts in one day, wait until the next day.
  • Code reported as invalid: check for typing errors. Xbox codes never contain A, E, I, O, U, L, S, 0, 1 or 5.
  • Code already redeemed: check the order history of your other Microsoft accounts. A redeemed code cannot be moved.
  • Code not working 24 hours after purchase: Microsoft sends you back to the seller. Write to support@japan-codes.com with a screenshot of the error.
  • Error XBOS3008: the account is suspended or has a balance due. Pay the balance first. A code cannot settle it.
  • Error SVC60017: try again in a few hours.
  • “Incorrect region” or “region block” when buying: match the console location or store market to the account. Microsoft says a billing address and payment option must match the locale. It documents no fix for people who do not live in the region.
  • “Oops. Not sure what happened there. Please try again later.” on every purchase: Microsoft customers reported this in the Japan store in 2025, including one living in Japan with a yen balance. The reports show no fix.

Rules and limits worth knowing

  • Region and residence. Microsoft’s help pages say: “Make sure that the region on your Microsoft account matches your physical location.” Its Services Agreement says you agree not to use “false, inaccurate or misleading information” when signing up. The Japanese version adds that you agree not to hide or misstate your location to use the services. A Japan account used from another country does not match that wording.
  • VPN. Microsoft allows a VPN for privacy but lists “redeeming region-locked content by masking your location” as not allowed in some situations. It may decline or reverse such a transaction. See Microsoft’s payment errors page.
  • Redeeming from outside Japan. Reports differ. Two customer reports from 2024, one of them about an Xbox 360, say a yen card redeemed on a Japan account without a VPN. Microsoft’s explanation of its “VPN detected” error says the transaction “must originate from your account’s home region without the use of location-masking technologies”. A 2026 report describes a gifted game code, not a prepaid card, refused for a person outside the account’s country with no VPN in use. We found no first-hand report from 2025 or 2026 for prepaid cards.
  • The balance stays in Japan. It can be spent only in the Japan store. It cannot be converted to another currency. See Microsoft’s gift card terms.
  • What it buys. Games, apps, add-ons, films and TV in the Microsoft Store online, on Windows and on Xbox. Of subscriptions, only Xbox subscriptions. Which Game Pass plans a yen balance pays for is not confirmed. It does not buy certain in-app purchases and subscriptions, and it cannot be used in physical stores.
  • Shortfall. If the balance does not cover the full price, the rest must come from another payment option on the account, or you add more value first.
  • Limits. Microsoft limits the balance held in one account, the amount added per day and the amount spent per day to the equivalent of 1,000 US dollars each. Microsoft Japan gives this as about 100,000 yen and publishes no exact yen figure. All accounts of one person together are limited to the equivalent of 5,000 US dollars.
  • Expiry. The balance does not expire and has no fees.
  • Inactive accounts. Microsoft closes accounts with no sign-in for two years. Its activity policy keeps an account active while it holds an unspent balance. Signing in from time to time is still sensible.

FAQ

Do I need a VPN?

Microsoft does not document a Japanese connection as a requirement, and whether redeeming works from outside Japan is not confirmed. Its policy treats location masking as a risk to the transaction and the account. We cannot help you find a VPN.

Can I redeem in the Xbox mobile app?

Microsoft’s own pages disagree. One gives steps for the app and another says the app cannot redeem codes at this time. Use a web browser or a console.

Can I send games from the Japan account to my main account as gifts?

No. Microsoft says the giver and the recipient of a gifted game must be in the same country or region.

How do I use the Japan account on a Windows PC?

The Xbox app uses two sign-ins: your Xbox profile and a separate Microsoft Store account. Games you buy follow the Store account. Change it under your gamerpic (profile picture) > Settings > Account > Change my Microsoft Store account.

The cards this guide covers are in our Xbox Prepaid Card (Japan) category. Delivery questions are answered in the store FAQ. For anything else, write to support@japan-codes.com.
