An Apple Japan Gift Card works only on an Apple Account set to Japan. Apple documents no need for a Japanese phone number or ID, but expects a billing address in Japan. Its terms reserve the card for residents of Japan, and Apple may void it without refund. Customers abroad report success, but also failed sign-ups and locked accounts. This guide is based on Apple’s own help pages and terms, and on customer reports where we say so, as of October 2026.
What you need
- An iPhone, iPad, Mac or Windows PC. Apple documents no way to redeem on Android or in a web browser, and customers report that the Android Apple Music app has no redeem option.
- An e-mail address that has never been used for an Apple Account. It is for the new account described in the next section.
- A phone number you can always reach. Apple sends sign-in codes to it, and two-factor authentication cannot be turned off.
- Apple’s form lists dial codes for many countries. Customers report that their own non-Japanese number works.
- A few customers report being asked for a Japanese number. The cause is unknown.
- Customers report that the number already on your main account can be used again. Some mention a limit that Apple does not document.
- To be 13 or older. Apple asks for a date of birth, not for an ID document.
- A billing address in Japan. Apple expects a billing address in the account’s country. A non-resident does not have one. Part 3 below says what customers report and what Apple’s terms say.
- A payment card: not for the account itself, in reports. Customers abroad report that they selected None as the payment method. Apple documents None when an account is created in the App Store, on a Mac or in its Windows apps. It does not say who is shown this option, so it is not certain that you will see it. Apple also says some purchases may need a credit card on file, and customers report that non-Japanese cards are refused.
Know the cost on your own iPhone or iPad: Apple states that each switch to the Japan account and back removes downloaded content from Apple services, such as downloaded music.
New account or existing one
Create a new, separate account. Apple’s FAQ recommends having just one Apple Account, but Apple also describes a second account that is used only for purchases.
Changing your existing account to Japan is the worse option. Apple requires you to spend the whole balance first, cancel subscriptions and wait until they end. It may also ask for a payment method that is valid in Japan. Reports differ on whether the change works without one.
Creating the account
The path below is the one most customer reports describe: create the account in a web browser, sign it in on the device, then complete a first-use set-up in the App Store. We found no customer report written on iOS 27, the current version.
Part 1: create the account in a web browser (any device)
This form asks for no payment method and no address. It may appear in English or in Japanese, so both labels are given.
- Open account.apple.com and click Create Your Apple Account (Apple Accountを作成).
- Enter First Name (名) and Last Name (姓).
- Set Country/Region (国/地域) to Japan (日本). Check it by hand: the country already selected may not be Japan.
- Enter your Birthday (生年月日).
- Enter your e-mail address.
- Fill in Password (パスワード) and Confirm Password (パスワードを確認).
- Choose the dial code of your own country and enter your Phone Number (電話番号).
- Under Verify with: (確認方法:), choose Text message (SMS) or Phone call (音声通話).
- Type the characters shown in the image and click Continue (次に進む).
- On Verify Email Address (メールアドレスを確認), enter the code sent to your e-mail.
- On Verify Phone Number (電話番号を確認), enter the code sent to your phone. If no text arrives, use Call Me (音声通話で発信).
Part 2: sign the Japan account in on iPhone or iPad
These steps assume the device is signed in to your main Apple Account. Read the warnings first.
- Apple states that signing in and out of Media & Purchases removes downloaded content from Apple services from the device.
- While the Japan account is signed in, your main account is signed out of Apple’s stores on that device. The confirmation text shown in customer guides names the App Store, Books, Music and Podcasts. In reports, installed apps stay.
- There are two Sign Out buttons. The one at the bottom of the Apple Account screen also signs you out of iCloud, iMessage and FaceTime. Do not use it.
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Media & Purchases (メディアと購入).
- Tap the Sign Out (サインアウト) that belongs to Media & Purchases, not the one at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Confirm (確認). Customer guides show a second Sign Out here instead.
- Tap Media & Purchases again.
- Tap Not [your name]? ([ユーザー名]ではありませんか?). An older Apple article writes the Japanese label as [あなたの名前]ではない場合.
- Sign in with the e-mail address and password of the Japan account.
Apple gives these same taps in the section “Sign out of Media & Purchases” of its help article If you can’t find your family’s shared apps and content.
Part 3: first-use set-up in the App Store
Customer guides describe a one-time set-up the first time a web-made account uses the App Store. Apple says only that you might need to add payment information when you first sign in. The order of the screens below follows those guides. The labels are from Apple’s own App Store text.
Prepare the billing address before you start. Apple expects an address in Japan, and its terms treat the account country as your country of residence. Customers report that an address in Japanese format, for example that of a hotel, is accepted. Whether Apple checks the address is not known.
- Open the App Store and start a free download, for example a free app.
- An alert says that this Apple Account has not yet been used in the iTunes Store. Tap Review (レビュー). This alert is known only from customer guides, and its wording may have changed.
- Accept Agree to Terms and Conditions (利用規約に同意する).
- Tap Next (次へ).
- Under PAYMENT METHOD (お支払い方法), select None (なし) if it is shown. If it is not, see “Problems and fixes”.
- Fill in BILLING NAME (請求先氏名). Whether the name must be in Japanese script is not known.
- Fill in BILLING ADDRESS (請求先住所). Apple’s web form uses the labels below. The labels on your device may differ.
- Postal code (郵便番号)
- Prefecture (県を選択)
- City (市区町村)
- Street address (住所)
- Building and room (建物名/部屋番号)
- Area code (市外局番) and phone number (電話番号). Whether a Japanese number is required here is not known. One customer reports that a non-Japanese number was accepted.
- Wait for Apple Account Completed (Apple Account作成完了), then tap Continue (続ける).
On a Mac
- Open the App Store and click Sign In.
- Sign in with the Japan account. If you are asked to review the account, see Part 3 for what customers report it asks for.
To change the App Store account later, open the Store menu and choose Sign Out.
On a Windows PC
- Install the Apple Music or Apple TV app from the Microsoft Store.
- Click Sign In (サインイン).
- Choose one of two ways:
- Sign in with the account you made on the web and complete the set-up there. Two customers report choosing None (なし) when they completed a web-made account on a computer, in iTunes for Windows.
- Or choose Create New Apple Account (Apple Accountを新規作成). Apple says None can be chosen as payment when you create the account there.
Redeeming the code
Your code arrives by e-mail from us. It has 16 characters and starts with X. The Japan account must be the one signed in to the App Store. If it is not, you see a message that the code must be redeemed in another storefront.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your photo or initials at the top (My Account, マイアカウント).
- Tap Redeem Code (コードを使う).
- Tap Enter Code Manually (手動でコードを入力).
- Type the code.
- Tap Redeem (コードを使う, the same Japanese label as in step 3).
A confirmation shows the amount added and your new balance. The exact wording varies.
Mac
- Open the App Store and click your name in the sidebar.
- Click Redeem Code (コードを使う).
- Choose to enter the code manually (コードを手動で入力) and type it.
Windows PC
- Open the Apple Music or Apple TV app and click your name at the bottom of the sidebar.
- Click Redeem (コードを使う) and enter the code.
On a PC that cannot run these apps, Apple points to iTunes for Windows: Account (アカウント), then Redeem (コードを使う). Apple says no credit card information is needed there to redeem only a gift card.
Apple’s steps for every device are in its help article on redeeming a gift card.
Problems and fixes
- “Your account cannot be created at this time”: Apple says to try again later, on another network, or in the device’s Settings instead of the web. In the App Store on an iPhone or iPad, the option to create a new account is shown only while the device is signed out of iCloud. See its help article for when an Apple Account cannot be created. Customers report that Apple Support can clear an e-mail address or number for sign-up.
- The phone code never arrives, or too many codes were sent: wait, use Call Me (音声通話で発信), or use another number.
- You are asked for a Japanese phone number: check that your own country’s dial code is selected. If it is, try the sign-up on another device or in one of Apple’s apps. Some customers report this request and we do not know why it appears.
- “The maximum number of free accounts have been activated”: Apple says the device has set up too many accounts with iCloud this year. Its only fix is to set the account up on another Apple device.
- The Japan account is signed in but you still see your home country’s App Store: in customer reports this means the set-up in Part 3 was not completed. Do it again, or try later.
- The set-up in Part 3 loops or shows an error: customers report success after waiting some hours. Apple also describes setting up an account by signing in at music.apple.com or tv.apple.com and following the prompts. We found no report of this for a Japan account.
- None is not shown as a payment method: there is no documented fix. Apple requires a payment method on accounts that have subscriptions, an unpaid balance, or are a Family Sharing organizer using purchase sharing. Two customers report that they could choose None in iTunes for Windows.
- The code must be redeemed in another storefront (another country’s store): the account signed in to the App Store is not a Japan account.
- The code is not valid: type it again and check characters that look alike.
- The code is already redeemed: sign out of the Japan account and in again to refresh the balance.
- The code is not activated, or it still fails: write to support@japan-codes.com.
- You have a balance but a purchase is refused or a card is requested: there is no documented workaround.
- Downloaded music is gone, or Apple Music stopped: this is the expected effect of switching accounts. Sign your main account in again and download again.
- Apps from the Japan App Store do not update: sign the Japan account in under Media & Purchases.
- The account is locked or disabled: request reactivation from the alert or through Apple Support. Customers report that such requests are often refused.
More code errors are covered in Apple’s help article for gift cards that cannot be redeemed.
Rules and limits
- Residence. Apple’s terms say: “Our Services are available for your use in your country or territory of residence.” By creating an account for a country you name it as your home country. The Japan gift card terms say the user must be 13 or older and live in Japan, and that cards may not be resold.
- Enforcement. Under those terms Apple may void a card without refund and suspend or close an account if it suspects a breach. Some customers report that new accounts were locked, sometimes within minutes. In reports about disabled accounts, gift cards bought from third parties are the factor named most often. For Japan cards from resellers specifically, reports differ. Using a separate account limits what is at risk on your main account.
- Region. A Japan card can be linked only to a Japan account and used only for Japan purchases. Apple says a gift card cannot be redeemed outside the country or region where it was bought.
- Expiry and cap. The balance does not expire. An account can hold at most 300,000 yen.
- What it buys. Apps, in-app purchases, music, movies, books, subscriptions and iCloud+. Not gifts or gift cards. Apple says some subscriptions might not be charged to the balance, and that some recurring charges, such as AppleCare+, cannot be started with it. The Japan store lists movie purchases but not TV-show purchases.
- Cards. The balance is charged first. If it is too low, Apple charges another payment method on file, asks for one, or cancels the purchase. Apple also says some purchases may need a credit card on file even with a balance, and does not say which.
- Apps. Customers report that some Japanese apps block use from abroad on their own. That is the app’s rule, not Apple’s.
The card rules are in Apple’s Japan gift card terms (Japanese).
FAQ
Do I need a VPN?
Apple’s terms and help pages say nothing about VPNs, and customers report that none is needed.
Do I have to keep the Japan account signed in?
No. You can sign your main account back in the same way as in Part 2. Apps update only with the account that got them, and each switch removes downloaded Apple media again, so switching often has a cost.
Can I spend the balance on Apple hardware?
Not in a practical way from abroad. Apple’s online store for Japan ships only inside Japan, and in-store use needs the Apple Account card in Wallet at an Apple Store in Japan.
What if I lose the phone number?
Apple says account recovery might take a few days or longer, and one customer reports losing an account this way. Use a number you will keep.
